Creating Accessible Adobe Acrobat PDF's 1. Introduction to PDF Accessibility • What is Accessibility? o Overview of accessibility laws in Canada (ACA, WCAG 2.1). o Barriers faced by users and how accessible PDFs help. • Understanding PDF Structure o Basics of tags, reading order, and navigation. 2. Creating Accessible PDFs from Source Files (20 minutes) • Best Practices in Source Documents o Using styles, headings, and alt text in Word. o Structuring tables for accessibility. • Exporting to PDF o Accessibility considerations during export (e.g., “Save As” vs. “Print to PDF”). 3. Remediating PDFs in Adobe Acrobat • Introduction to Tags and the Tags Panel o Understanding tag types and their purpose. o Editing tags for text, images, and lists. • Adding Alternative Text o Writing meaningful alt text for images and charts. • Structuring Tables o Tagging headers and ensuring proper table structure. • Fixing Reading Order o Using the Order Panel to correct the logical flow of content. 4. Tools for Accessibility in Adobe Acrobat • Accessibility Checker o Running the checker and addressing common issues. o Fixing flagged items such as missing metadata or tags. • Other Tools o Using the "Make Accessible" wizard. o Testing with a screen reader. 5.
